Within tennis there are various scoring methods. The basis of all scoring can be broken into;

  • the number of sets
  • the number of games
  • the type of games
  • how the MatchUp is decided when there is a tie

OR

  • Timed games

There are also 5 stand out types of formats; Standard, Short Sets, Pro sets, Tiebreaker Sets and Timed games.

Historically, capturing these scoring methods can be tricky, usually requiring long descriptions eg Best 2 Out Of 3 Short Sets (Win By One) (7 Point Match Tiebreak in lieu of the 3rd set).

The Match UpFormat Code tries to alleviate this by compacting all formats into a machine and human readable format. From this, system architects can create mappings between a description and the match format code easily.

The Match Up Format Code consists of

SET{number of sets, usually 1,3,5}

-S:{number of games}

{NOAD} if no-advantage games are played. If omitted, advantage games are assumed

/TB{number of tiebreak rounds}

@{when the tiebreaker is to be started}

OR

-S:TB{number of tiebreak games}

Some matches require a different format for the final set. This can be defined by replacing -S: with a -F:.

Timed matches are also possible. These are points based eg T90P or games based T90G.
